Being bisexual, I obviously have no problem with LGBT lifestyles; everyone should live the life that's best for them, as long as they don't harm others. While I do feel it's important that children learn it's okay for two men (or women) to be in love, there is a time and a place for everything.
When one makes an crusade out of something that doesn't matter to the people affected by it, that screams "personal agenda". Bert and Ernie's sexuality shouldn't be an issue with adults because it's not an issue with the children watching it. The people on both sides of this argument have ignored the simple fact that it doesn't matter if Bert and Ernie are gay, straight, bisexual, or even celibate; all that matters is that they're best friends.
I've heard the question, "Yeah, but why do they sleep in the same room?" Who cares? It's a children's television show! Ask yourself why Mr. Dressup* had some kid living in a tree-house in his backyard, or think about how much time Fred Penner* spent alone in the woods. Suddenly, the sleeping arrangements of two roommates seems less weird.
As a population, we should be encouraging our youth to understand that there are many ways to live life and they're all sacred but, sometimes, we just need to let them sing along to "Rubber Duckie".
*For the non-Canadians, Mr. Dressup was the cooler, Canadian Mr. Rodgers. Fred Penner was the more child-friendly Tommy Chong.
